Why is the comment rank sometimes different on CrowdReply vs what I see on Reddit?

CrowdReply calculates Comment Rank using the Reddit API. Specifically: We fetch the thread’s comments via the API We sort them using Reddit’s “Top” ranking Then we assign rank based on the order Reddit returns (1 = top comment, 2 = second, etc.) So in most cases, CrowdReply’s rank matches what you’d see if you open the thread and sort by Top. CrowdReply calculates Comment Rank using the Reddit API. Specifically:

• We fetch the thread’s comments via the API
• We sort them using Reddit’s “Top” ranking
• Then we assign rank based on the order Reddit returns (1 = top comment, 2 = second, etc.)

So in most cases, CrowdReply’s rank matches what you’d see if you open the thread and sort by Top.

Why can there still be a mismatch?

In some cases, Reddit shows a different “Top” order on the actual thread UI than what the API returns.

This can happen due to a few Reddit-side behaviors we don’t control, such as:

• Reddit UI vs API inconsistencies (rare, but real)
• Soft-filtered / collapsed / crowd-controlled comments being treated differently in the UI
• Sort logic differences between platforms (desktop vs mobile) or temporary experiments
• Timing/cache delays where the API updates slightly differently than what loads on the page

This is why you may see situations like:

• CrowdReply shows Rank #4, but the thread UI shows #1
• CrowdReply shows Rank #1, but the thread UI shows #5

Important note

When these mismatches happen, there isn’t much we can do on our end - this behavior comes directly from Reddit’s ranking and API inconsistencies.
